St. Mary’s Boys Home – Kalmunai
This orphanage houses 75 boys and is run by the “Brothers of Charity”. It is situated in a rural area on the East coast of Sri Lanka. When Sonja Burri first visited this home in 1997, it was completely run down. Not one latrine (WC) was working and the children were not getting enough to eat. The Home was occupied by thousands of refugees during the ethnic troubles. Since then the latrines have been repaired and the orphanage repainted inside and out. Thanks to a donation, we completed an irrigation system in 1999/2000, so that the Home was able to maintain a vegetable garden. Special donations provided funds to build new classrooms and also provides educational courses.
